Pam Grier is a celebrated American actress who first rose to prominence through her appearances in a series of blaxploitation films, including The Big Bird Cage, Coffy, Foxy Brown, and Sheba Baby.

Although her early roles in this genre drew criticism, she experienced a powerful resurgence in her career with Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, a performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

By the early 1970s, Grier had become one of the defining figures of blaxploitation cinema, known for portraying strong, fearless, and commanding women—beginning with Jack Hill’s Coffy (1973), in which she played a nurse on a mission of vengeance against drug traffickers.

The movie’s trailer promoted her as “the toughest one-woman strike force ever to hit the streets,” and despite its heavy use of sex and violence—hallmarks of the genre—the film became a major box-office success.

Grier is widely recognized as the first Black woman to lead an action movie, since earlier blaxploitation films had almost always centered on male protagonists.

In his review of Coffy, film critic Roger Ebert highlighted Grier’s authenticity on screen. He praised her striking appearance while also emphasizing that she brought genuine vitality and presence to the role—qualities he felt were often lacking in other glamorous actresses.

Among her most notable early roles were appearances in The Big Doll House (1971), Women in Cages (1971), The Big Bird Cage (1972), Black Mama, White Mama (1973), Scream Blacula Scream (1973), The Arena (1974), Sheba, Baby (1975), Bucktown (1975), and Friday Foster (1975). Decades later, she took on the lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s crime drama Jackie Brown (1997), a film built around her performance.

Pam Grier was born on May 26, 1949, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her mother, Gwendolyn Sylvia Samuels, worked as both a homemaker and a nurse, while her father, Clarence Ransom Grier Jr., served as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and also worked as a mechanic.
