Vintage dating tips for single women, 1938

Ladies, this is how a man in 1938-style is landed. We always find these old “dating advice” for single women funny. Consider this: “Don’t drink too much; a man wants you to preserve your dignity all evening.

Drinking may make some girls seem smart, but most get crazy’ and “Careless women never appeal to gentlemen, Don’t talk while dancing, for when a man dances he wants to dance.”

Originally written for Click Photo-Parade magazine in 1938, this essay reflects the attitudes of unmarried women at that time. In decades past, the secret to obtaining a fella to put a ring on it was all about maintaining your emotions, lady secrets, and basically any evidence of a personality or individual humanity at bay (and also sitting properly). Unless you want to be left alone and without someone to adore you. And late in the 1930s, you wanted not to be “that woman.”

Keep in mind also: Talk about his attire, not about your own! Or, you know, simply avoid talking at all. Stay sitting in uncomfortable silence until someone sneezes; kindly bless them; avoid being overly emotive about it; then wait for someone to flag down a server for the check.
